Austria is exploring the possibility of joining Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative as the two nations aim to enhance their defense and security collaboration. Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner visited Luxembourg for discussions with her counterpart, Yuriko Backes, focusing on expanding their partnership in defense, space, and cybersecurity. The visit also included talks with SES, the satellite operator, regarding Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 program.
In light of escalating geopolitical tensions, Minister Tanner emphasized the growing importance of secure satellite communications. She noted that enhanced cooperation in this domain could bolster the resilience of state communications and contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy. The GovSat 2 satellite is intended to deliver secure communication services to Luxembourg’s defense sector, the European Union, NATO, and partnering countries, with its launch anticipated in 2029.
The two countries took a significant step by signing a letter of intent to deepen their collaboration across various defense-related areas, including cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. This agreement signifies a commitment to strengthening joint efforts in these critical fields. However, Austria has not yet disclosed the extent of its financial investment should it decide to formally participate in the GovSat 2 project.
