In a strategic move to bolster domestic semiconductor production, Apple has unveiled a multi-year collaboration with Broadcom, committing over $30 billion to produce more than 15 billion chips within the United States. This significant investment highlights Apple’s ambition to establish a comprehensive U.S.-based chip ecosystem that encompasses both the design and manufacturing of chips. As a part of this initiative, the company aims to enhance its American supply chain and boost the production of advanced wireless technologies integral to Apple devices, thereby supporting hundreds of jobs across the nation.
The agreement includes a $1.5 billion investment by Broadcom to upgrade and expand its manufacturing plant in Fort Collins, Colorado. This facility will focus on producing cutting-edge radio frequency (RF) components such as FBAR filters, which are essential for improving wireless performance and connectivity in Apple products. Through this development, Apple is set to deepen its reliance on U.S.-based suppliers that specialize in advanced technology and high-quality manufacturing.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, emphasized that this partnership underscores the company’s enduring dedication to American manufacturing and innovation. He highlighted the crucial role that the advanced components from the Colorado facility will play in meeting the performance and wireless capability standards expected by Apple users. Broadcom’s CEO, Hock Tan, echoed similar sentiments, expressing enthusiasm for the strengthened collaboration.
