Luxembourg City is poised to expand its video surveillance network in the capital’s center, with Mayor Lydie Polfer requesting formal approval from Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden. The municipal council has given its initial endorsement, although the specifics regarding the number and placement of CCTV cameras are yet to be determined.
The initiative aims to bolster security in response to local demands for enhanced safety measures. Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer noted that similar expansions have already occurred in the Gare district and Bonnevoie, driven by rising security concerns and reported crimes. The city intends for the expanded surveillance to aid police in effectively performing their duties by providing necessary resources.
While acknowledging that CCTV cannot thwart all criminal activity, Mayor Polfer emphasized its role in aiding investigations by helping to identify suspects and reconstruct events. The police will conduct a security assessment to decide on the most strategic locations for the new cameras.
Local business owners and residents have been vocal in their support for heightened security, particularly to combat pickpocketing and other offenses. Proponents of the plan believe that the presence of CCTV cameras could serve as a deterrent to potential criminals and assist law enforcement in ongoing investigations.
