Singapore and Luxembourg are advancing their collaboration in emerging technology sectors such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and space and satellite communications. This move is part of the effort to enhance the longstanding partnership between the two nations. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong highlighted the shared challenges faced by both countries, noting their status as small states with limited domestic markets and natural resources. Wong emphasized that their openness and international ties have enabled them to emerge as significant financial and business hubs catering to larger regional markets.
The economic ties between Singapore and Luxembourg are notably strong, with Luxembourg being the largest European Union investor in Singapore, while Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU bloc. Additionally, the two nations are working towards fortifying the links between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union. Wong stated that both Singapore and Luxembourg are advocates for regional integration and are committed to maintaining an open, rules-based international environment.
During an official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their discussions focused on geopolitical developments and explored strategies for both nations to enhance stability, predictability, and the rule of law. This visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Luxembourg.
Significantly, Luxembourg has demonstrated its commitment to deepening engagement with Singapore and the broader region by opening its first resident embassy in Singapore. This initiative is viewed as a strong signal of Luxembourg’s dedication to expanding its presence and collaboration in the area.
Prime Minister Frieden is also scheduled to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8. His lecture will center on the theme of Europe’s role and autonomy amid a shifting global landscape, offering insights into how the continent navigates its position in an evolving international environment.
