In a strategic reshuffle at Google DeepMind, co-founder Sir Demis Hassabis is set to transition from his role as chief executive, taking on new responsibilities within the broader Alphabet ecosystem. Since its inception in 2010, Hassabis has been pivotal in steering DeepMind’s vision, and he will now assume the position of chair while also becoming chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This change will allow him to concentrate on long-term AI research and the development of artificial general intelligence, areas he sees as crucial for the future of the technology.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently the chief technology officer at DeepMind, is poised to succeed Hassabis as the leader of the AI research unit. Kavukcuoglu will step into the role of senior vice-president, overseeing the day-to-day operations. This leadership transition is designed to enable Hassabis to dedicate more effort to advancing AI technologies that are beneficial to humanity. In addition to his new roles, Hassabis will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery company that emerged from DeepMind’s innovative work.

The leadership overhaul at DeepMind coincides with the departure of prominent AI engineers from Google. Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, both senior figures in Google’s AI division, are leaving to establish a new venture named Discovery Loop. Their startup will focus on the intersections of machine learning, science, and engineering research, aiming to carve out new advancements in these fields.

These developments occur amid an increasingly competitive landscape in the AI industry, with Google facing formidable challenges from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. These rivals have been making significant strides in AI models and coding technologies, pushing the boundaries of what artificial intelligence can achieve. The changes at DeepMind reflect Google’s strategic efforts to maintain and enhance its leadership role in the rapidly evolving race towards advanced AI solutions.
