Italy’s Inflation Hits 5.4% in October Amid Rising Energy Costs

by admin477351

Italy’s inflation rate surged to 5.4% in October, marking its highest level since August 2023, as escalating energy prices fueled economic pressures. This represents a significant jump from the 4.2% rate recorded in September, with energy costs identified as the primary driver behind this increase.

The sharp rise in energy prices is attributed partly to geopolitical tensions, such as the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The annual growth rate for energy prices soared from 22.6% in September to 31.4% in October. Within this category, regulated energy product prices nearly doubled, climbing from 25.8% to 59.5%, while non-regulated energy prices rose from 22.5% to 29.4%.

Inflationary pressures were further exacerbated by rising food costs. Unprocessed food prices saw inflation increase from 5.5% to 7.5%, and although processed food prices, including alcohol, experienced a slight annual decline, the reduction was less pronounced, moving from 0.6% to 0.2%.

Transportation services also contributed to the inflation hike, with prices rising from 1.6% to 3.1%. These increases highlight the growing burden on Italian households, as the consumer price index indicated a 0.9% rise in October compared to the previous month, reflecting the ongoing strain of living costs.
