WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Secure Chats Without Phone Number Sharing

by admin477351

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to reserve unique usernames, enhancing privacy by enabling communication without revealing phone numbers. This privacy-centered update is set to be available globally later this year. Users can now secure a username in advance of the feature’s full implementation, enabling them to use the username instead of their phone number when initiating new conversations.

The feature can be accessed by updating the WhatsApp app and navigating to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. Notifications will inform users when the feature is available in their specific region. Unlike social media platforms, WhatsApp is not planning to launch a public directory for username searches. This means that only those who know a user’s exact username will be able to contact them, reducing spam and unwanted messages.

WhatsApp is also offering an optional username key, which can be shared to exert additional control over who can initiate chats. The use of usernames is not mandatory, and users may continue using their phone numbers if they prefer. This update aims to enhance privacy while also offering flexibility in how users connect with others.

The new username feature could be particularly beneficial for creators, businesses, and organizations aiming to maintain consistent identities across Meta Platforms services. Users may have the opportunity to secure matching usernames across different platforms where this feature is available, helping them maintain a cohesive brand presence.
