Italy is seeking to bolster its energy resources amid soaring domestic energy prices, which have reached their highest levels in two years. This pressing need was a focal point of discussions between Confindustria President Emanuele Orsini and Argentine President Javier Milei during their recent meeting in Buenos Aires. Orsini emphasized the critical nature of this issue, noting that the rising costs are significantly affecting the competitiveness of Italian businesses.
The meeting, which Orsini described as positive, highlighted the potential for increased energy collaboration between Italy and Argentina. He pointed to the substantial opportunities in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation, a site with considerable oil and gas production potential, which could serve as a key source of energy exports to Italy.
Discussions between the two leaders also covered broader prospects for trade and the strengthening of supply chains, which could further enhance economic relations between their countries. Orsini expressed optimism about the future, indicating that the Argentine market currently accounts for about $1.2 billion in business for Italian companies. However, he projected that this figure could rise to approximately $7 billion over the coming years, given the right conditions and partnerships.
In his remarks, Orsini underscored the shared similarities between Italy and Argentina, which could serve as a foundation for deeper economic ties. He reiterated the importance of securing energy supplies to maintain and enhance the competitiveness of Italian enterprises, suggesting that strategic partnerships with countries like Argentina could be instrumental in this endeavor.
