The anticipated decline is largely due to a drop in interest from long-haul travelers, affected by disruptions in airspace, escalating fuel costs, and rising airfare prices. These factors have complicated and increased the expense of international travel, especially for tourists from Asia. Visitors from India and Southeast Asia are likely to be most impacted by these challenges, owing to disruptions at key Middle Eastern aviation hubs and broader economic pressures tied to energy imports.
Swiss tourism operators have already begun to note tougher business conditions, with a significant dip in the number of visitors from Asian countries. While the demand from China is expected to hold steady, thanks to direct flight options, growth in tourists from the United States is anticipated to slow compared to previous years. Meanwhile, domestic tourism is poised to offer some relief, as Swiss nationals increasingly favor local destinations over international travel, which has become pricier and more uncertain.
European tourist numbers are also predicted to see a slight decrease, partly because the summer of 2025 was boosted by major international events that will not occur again this year. Despite these short-term hurdles, Switzerland continues to be one of the most attractive tourism spots in the Alpine region. Yet, industry experts highlight that some locations face ongoing challenges in extending visitor stays and optimizing tourism revenue.
