Zelenskyy Unaware of Trump’s Claimed Ukraine-Russia Energy Ceasefire

by admin477351

US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has been met with skepticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who stated he was not consulted on the agreement. Trump claimed that both nations had agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, yet Zelenskyy insisted Ukraine would only comply if Russia reciprocated by stopping its strikes.

Trump’s declaration was made through a social media post, but it lacked specifics regarding the ceasefire’s initiation and enforcement. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine remains willing to participate if Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees to the same terms. The announcement comes amid tensions between the US and Ukraine following Trump’s urging for Ukraine to cease its long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries, a demand Zelenskyy has resisted without assurances that Russia will also stop targeting Ukrainian energy facilities.

Despite the ceasefire announcement, Zelenskyy reported ongoing Russian drone and airstrikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including attacks on a thermal power station in Kharkiv and various gas and oil facilities. These continued assaults underscore Ukrainian demands for equal application of any truce conditions.

Compounding the situation, Trump has proposed easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, arguing that it could reduce fuel prices before the upcoming US midterm elections. This move has drawn criticism from Zelenskyy, who warned that such a decision could bolster Russia’s war financing capabilities. Trump, in turn, criticized Zelenskyy for his unwillingness to make concessions, suggesting a need for new leadership in Ukraine, a notion Zelenskyy dismissed by asserting that leadership choices belong to the Ukrainian people.

The disagreement over the ceasefire terms and the potential easing of sanctions have raised concerns among Ukrainian officials and European allies about the US’s strategy to end the conflict. Reports indicate that Washington may use military and economic incentives to pressure both Kyiv and Moscow into an agreement.

In response, Zelenskyy has engaged with European and international leaders to bolster support for Ukraine, with several expressing the necessity of maintaining pressure on Russia and calling for an immediate cessation of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The outcome of the proposed ceasefire remains unclear, with no confirmation of Russia’s agreement to its conditions, highlighting the persistent tensions between the US and Ukraine over the terms required for lasting peace.
